Weekly Winners – July 19th – July 25th, 2009

This week’s Weekly Winners are brief and close to home. No big adventures like Jet Skiing were had. Just pleasant and peaceful summer days in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Weekly Winners – July 12 – July 18, 2009 – Jet Skiing With Neighborhood Kids

This morning I got choked up and emotional. I was thinking about all the kindnesses my friends and associates have given the children on my street, children they had never met. Christina at AmiExpat shipped them a box packed full of German chocolates. My friend Bill and his lovely wife Priscilla donated a laptop to our unofficial computer lab. The former proprietors of The Riverhouse Coffee Company donated an old laptop as well.

This week’s Weekly Winners document another kindness. My co-worker, ZJ, and his brother-in-law, Bruce, recently purchased a Jet Ski. And even though this equipment is brand new and probably very expensive– they invited some of the neighborhood kids to come up to First Landing State Park at Virginia Beach for a day of jet skiing.

I took fifteen year old Khalif, twelve year old Armani and eleven year olds Jacal and Jamonte. Bruce’s friends Ray and Vanessa came as well and brought their young daughter, Kristin.

Weekly Winners – June 21, 2009 – June 27, 2008 – Northwest River Park and Camden Causeway

This week’s Weekly Winners come from last Sunday’s outing with the dogs. We went to the Camden Causeway Park outside of Elizabeth City, North Carolina and then the Northwest River Park in Chesapeake, Virginia. The best part our outing, however, is not pictured. At Northwest River Park, we laid down on some picnic tables and took a nice, long, incredibly peaceful, nap. It was completely unplanned and yet a great way to recoup after a hectic week.

Weekly Winners – June 14 – June 20, 2009

This week’s set comes from La Crosse, Wisconsin. I was traveling for work, but had some fun as well! One evening I got to go out for a boat ride with my co-worker and her family. They took me on a sunset cruise on two beautiful rivers– Black and Mississippi.

Weekly Winners – May 31 – June 6, 2009 – Mount Rogers

Welcome to another late edition to Weekly Winners! I’m tardy again with good cause! I spent the weekend backpacking with my boyfriend and dogs at Grayson Highlands State Park and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The area is known for its wild ponies and the beautiful rhododendrons that bloom in early June. Mount Rogers was as picturesque as usual and we could not have asked for a prettier weekend. Enjoy!

Weekly Winners – May 23rd – May 30, 2009

This week’s Weekly Winners once again come from Elizabeth City, North Carolina and focus on the neighborhood kids. On Saturday, Ryan and I did the Pasquotank County Relay for Life. Three neighborhood kids came with us and stayed overnight. They had some misconceptions about cancer, so the event turned out to be educational as well as fun. The boys had a blast walking, playing football, playing basketball and competing in the various games throughout the evening. Even the rainstorms did not deter their enthusiasm.

Our backyard is now home to a badminton net. The weeknight evenings have been filled with impromptu “tennis” matches. I have been amazed at how rapidly the boys have improved. In just a week of playing, they hit consistently and have no problem winding me. It’s also impressive how hard they hustle. Six year old Tykee has to work particularly hard as he is smaller than the rest of the players.

On the subject of badminton, earlier this week a kid I had never met before came over to play.  After about an hour of wacking the birdie around with the other boys, he got thirsty.  As I escorted him inside to get water, he asked me a question.

“Is this a daycare?”

Weekly Winners – May 10 – May 16th – Baby Opossum

This week’s photo inventory was sparse. I was sick all week. But I did snag a couple of shots and I didn’t have to travel far. I went briefly to Elizabeth City’s Potato Festival. Even closer to home, a baby opossum with a head injury (don’t worry- injury not pictured) wandered into the yard. He’s currently sleeping in a box and waiting to be claimed by a wildlife rehabilitator.

Weekly Winners – May 3- May 8, 2009

This week’s Weekly Winners come from two locales. First off, we have snippets of a Sunday trip Ryan and I took to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Next we have a Saturday trip to Maple Park near Currituck, North Carolina where my ten year old neighbor, Jacal, and his ten year old nephew, Jamontae, found their first geocache. Jamontae also got to try honeysuckle for the first time. Enjoy!

Weekly Winners and Hunter Street Water Fights – April 26 – May 2, 2009

A few weeks ago, my nine year old neighbor Tyrek said to me, “People say this is a poor area, but it’s not. We have nice places to eat and things to do. It’s not poor.”

I’m prone to agree with him. Hunter Street may not be Elizabeth City’s most affluent neighborhood, but we are rich in community and experiences. Every day there are people outside and children playing. Even on rainy days, the kids are out riding bikes making giant splashes in the puddles. And this week, it was quite hot. Did the neighborhood kids retreat inside to watch TV and play video games? Nope– they had giant water fights in the streets.

Out of all the neighborhoods I have lived in during my adult life, Hunter Street is my favorite. This week’s Weekly Winners share a glimpse of why.

This last one is blurry. But I just love little Tykee’s face as he comes after ME!

Before the water fight last Sunday, I was getting sleepy and unmotivated. After the water fight, I was completely soaked…and completely invigorated. It set me up for a very productive evening.

So if you are feeling sluggish, I suggest a good ole water fight.
