Leaving Your Mark on American Beech

A popular tree along the Bull Run Occoquan Trail is the American Beech.

An American Beech Along the Trail

Because of its thin bark, this type of tree often finds itself host to carvings. The average lifespan of an American Beech is 150 – 200 years, so whatever message one may carve will likely outlast the author. What pressure! How do you choose what small tidbit of wisdom to share for decades to come? If you are going to walk all the way into the woods and go to the trouble of etching your thought, it’s probably a concept pretty near and dear to your heart.

Hey – if that carving is 150 years old, Lincoln might have left it as a meditation on his declaration of war. Or maybe it was Katherine Hepburn’s way of memorializing her character’s abiding love for Henry Fonda’s character in On Golden Pond. (If you haven’t seen that movie, it’s a classic!!!)

Not all poop is dirty poop. 🙂

@Kitty – Thanks— In my day, I’ve run across some amusing graffiti in the middle of the woods as well.

Maybe it was carved by a specialist who just didn’t have the time to carve “gastrointestinal”, but still wanted to say what was important to him/her?
