Valley View Smokey Bones – Alive and Well… For Now

I’ve had three people tell me that the Smokey Bones at the Valley View Mall in Roanoke, Virginia is gone.  Closed Down.  Kaput.  I’m skeptical of those claims as I managed to eat there just this afternoon.  I wasn’t alone either.  The place was packed.  It was quite a crowd for a closed business.

I believe the confusion started over the Roanoke Times article “Time to stick a fork in barbecue chains?” from May 20th.  This line in the first paragraph does look pretty grim.

Just ask Darden Restaurants Inc., which is closing the Smokey Bones barbecue chain, defeated in an attempt to gain nationwide appeal with a standard set of recipes and grilling techniques.

It sounds like what really happened (based on a statement from Darden Restaurants) is 56 unprofitable restaurants were shut down and the remaining 73, including Valley View, remain running… and are up for sale.  The wait staff seemed unflustered by the news and assured me they will be there for some time.

Then again, years ago when I heard a rumor about a local restaurant becoming an Arby’s, I asked my waitress and she was completely shocked by my question.   “If it is,” she said, “This is the first I’ve heard of it!”  Just a couple of months later… it was an Arby’s. 🙂

On the subject of BBQ, I highly recommend Due South Pit Cooked BBQ in Christiansburg Virginia.  That place is AWESOME.  As soon as you step in the store, your nose makes it clear, “This is real barbeque.”  Due South gives you four delicious sauce choices (Smokey Bones only gives you a measley two).  My favorite is the tangy mustard sauce.  Sweet Red isn’t half bad either!  If you are a Fried Pickle fan, then know that Due South has them on the menu.  If you haven’t tried Fried Pickles, give them a shot.  I had some for the first time in Wisconsin last month.  They proved to be surprisingly good and unnervingly addictive.  Oh and one more perk of Due South BBQ–  They provide free scraps and bones for people to take home to their dogs (with a disclaimer about pet safety, of course).   🙂

I’m not that big of a fan of Pee Wee’s Barbeque in Blacksburg.  It didn’t seem much different than the microwave BBQ you can get at Food Lion.  I’ve only been there once and I probably would have visited it again, had it not been for Due South’s superior deliciousness.  I find Due South well worth the extra driving time.

Of course, later this month all of these New River Valley/Roanoke venues will be shown up.  I’ll be attending a friend’s Pig Pickin’ party the last weekend this month (Yup my last weekend in June is now booked up).  That slow cooked pig makes all others pale in comparison.

Welp, now that I successfully made myself hungry, I best be going to bed.

P.S. Dixie Bones in Woodbridge, Virginia and Bubba’s BBQ in Charlotte, North Carolina are both quite good as well.

P.S.S.  Dang it, now I’m even hungrier.
