Muir Woods has been a national monument for 100 years! I love how the man who donated the land, William Kent, declined to have it named after him. So they named it after Sierra Club Founder John Muir instead.

For 45,000 – 50,000 years, peat swamps in New Zealand have preserved the wood of Ancient Kauri trees. The wood is not petrified– it is workable. This page details a staircase built from one of the enormous logs.
